Homes by WestBay recently grand opened the fully decorated Key Largo model in the Summerglade neighborhood at WaterGrass. We sat down with Chris Popovich, Senior Designer from Masterpiece Design Group, to talk about how he made the model selections, what inspired his design and his decorating tips.

What is your decorating background?
I have always been artistic and passionate about design since an early age.  I attended college at Kent State University’s Industrial Design Program and went on to the Interior Design Program at SCC in Sanford, Florida.  I have been designing residential and commercial spaces, as well as, model merchandising for the past 10 years and am as passionate about design now as I was when I started.

Homes by WestBay Great RoomWhat is your favorite aspect of the Key Largo floorplan?
I love the high ceiling and standard features Homes by WestBay offers to their home buyers in this price point.  The open plan grand room concept is great for entertaining, and the generous master suite accommodations are a perfect retreat for families with a busy lifestyle.

Homes by WestBay Dining Room

What is your favorite room in the Homes by WestBay model?
I especially love the dining room in this model.  The creative use of stained tongue and groove detail with plate ledges, ceiling boxed beams, and columns add a sophisticated touch to an otherwise ordinary room.

What was the basis of your inspiration for the interior design?
Homes by WestBay Great Room- View 2I wanted to create a fresh approach to a classic, traditional design by mixing formal elements with rustic reclaimed and transitional pieces.  Mixing metal finishes and incorporating natural textiles like linens and cottons create a comfortable and inviting setting.

Which accent pieces do you find most interesting?
I particularly like the antique brass farmhouse floor Homes by WestBay Master Bedroomlamps that flank the sofa as well as the reclaimed wood ballast console table in the grand room.  I also love the eclectic mix of furnishings in the dining room.

Do you have any decorating tips for those looking to enhance their home?
Don’t be afraid to take chances and think outside the box.  Paint is the easiest and least expensive impact you can make in a space and don’t forget to paint your fifth wall, the ceiling.  Stick to neutral fabrics on your high ticket items like sofas and add impact with pillows and textiles, these items can easily be changed out for the season or as trends shift.  Incorporate a variety of lighting sources, task and accent lighting, to create drama and functionality to a space.
